TAGY Travel Korea

Songnisan Mountain National Park, about two hours south of Seoul, is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Korea. The word ‘Songnisan’ roughly translates as ‘remote from the ordinary world’, and there is indeed something otherworldly about the mountain-scape here. Trails can take you from its pine tree-lined lower roads to its forested craggy mountains reach a heady 1,000 meters high, and always provide views to inspire and admire. The huge bronze Buddha and unconventional five-story pagoda at Beopjusa temple which has registered as a UNESCO world heritage site are eye-catching. Your hiking will be starting at Beopjusa temple climbing to Cheonwangbong peak, continuing across the ridge to Munjangdae and return to Beopjusa temple.

Beopjusa Buddhist Temple

You will begin walking towards Beopjusa Temple. A network of seven Buddhist mountain temples including Beopjusa temple located across Korea's southern provinces has been added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites in 2018.

The spatial arrangement of the seven temples that comprise the site, established between the 7th and 9th centuries, present common characteristics that are specific to Korea – the madang open courtyard flanked by four buildings, the Buddha Hall, a pavilion, a lecture hall and a dormitory.

The 7.0 km from the temple to Cheonhwangbong is not particularly steep or rugged. The first 4.2 km is a gravel road, which winds alongside a placid lake. The last 2.8 km to the peak follows a well-maintained footpath with stone steps. As you make your way up, you can see the views of the valley and a small, quite buddhist hermitage built on a cliff. It will take you about 90 minutes to reach Cheonwangbong at a steady pace

From Cheonwangbong peak, it take another hour to do the 4 km along the ridge to Munjangdae, an outcropping with significant prominence where the park authorities had constructed an observation deck with 360 degree views. The ridge section, which is studded with interesting rock formations like Ipseokdae and Gyeongeopdae, Sinseondae has little in the way of elevation change, so you can move at quite a rapid pace.

When you reach the top of Songnisan Mountain, there is a large prominence granite rock.  Staring down from the rock gives you a great view of Songnisan Mountain. You will be able to look around an impressive collection of small mountains.  Now a set of steel steps leads up the side of the rock to the top.

Sanghwanam hermitage

The 7.1 km trek from Munjangdae back down to Beopjusa takes about 90 minutes, passing through lush forest areas and by small waterfalls and a few buddhist hermitages. Songnisan National Park is truly a wonderful site to visit all year around.
